The new electronics feeling—that,
I-just-got-this-and-have-to-keep-taking-it-out-and-turning-it-on-even-if-it’s-just-to-touch-it—wore
off of Amazon’s latest Kindle faster for me than anything I’ve tested in years.
That’s not a bad thing, it just means that the Kindle has matured; despite
significant physical changes to the device, this latest e-book reader slotted
right into Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem. It’s just thinner, lighter, and cheaper
than the other Kindles.
Although it’s still just called Kindle, this is Amazon’s
fourth iteration of the e-book reader, and it’s the first major departure from
the device’s original design. The latest Kindle ditches the hardware keyboard
for an on-screen keyboard and five-way digital pad and a handful of buttons
dedicated to key functions. At the same time, it loses a little bit of bezel
and weight.
