10. Garuda Airlines

Until recently, the Indonesian national carrier was so bad that in 2007 it was even prohibited from flying to EU countries. However, a couple of years later, the ban was lifted, and now Garuda successfully flies to Amsterdam and many Asian cities. Moreover, earlier this year the company awarded the title of “most significant breakthrough in quality.” Nevertheless, statistics of accidents states – four air crashes that have occurred since the company liners, killed 431 people. Most fatal crash happened in 1997 when caught in a trailing smoke from forest fires, plane crashed into a mountain, killing 234 passengers.
Flights: 2 million. Crash: 4. Died: 431.

9. Thai Airways

This year, the largest Thai carrier is celebrating its 50 anniversary. During its existence, the company has been honored with numerous awards for the quality of passenger service. In 2006, Thai Airways has received the prize “Best Crew” and “Best Airline of the world.” In 2007, it was nominated in the category of “Best Airline of the Year ”. In addition, the World Health Organization awarded “Thai Airways’ for best hygiene on board. But in the 1980′s and 1990′s flying on board of this airline was quite dangerous, as incidents haunted it, one after another. The biggest occurred in a flight from Kathmandu in 1992, when the airliner crash killed 113 people.
Flights: 1.98 million. Crash: 4. Died: 352.

8. Avianca

Avianca boasts the longest history of flight in the Western Hemisphere. The first carriage, it began to perform at the dawn of aviation in 1919. The company currently has the most modern fleet in South America, but its reputation was severely marred by several incidents. In the 80 years of airliners airplanes have been chosen for the attacks of the Colombian drug traffickers. To the sad list a plane crash in Madrid was added killing 181 passengers.
Flights: 1.47 million. Crash: 4. Died: 500.

7. Pakistan International Airlines

This state carrier of Pakistan was established in 1955 and now flies to 25 countries. Despite the fact that the company was established with the birth of the state, it has always tried to keep pace with the times and follow the latest trends in the airline industry. For example, PIA became the first airline in Asia, in a park of which there were jets. However, incidents involving airliners PIA has happened a lot. The most fatal of them killed 167 people in 1992, when the plane crashed into a mountain due to poor visibility.
Flights: 1.43 million. Crash: 5. Died: 440.

6. Egyptair

The largest airline flies to the African continent more than 70 destinations worldwide, annually transporting about 10 million people. Alas, since the 70′s the company pursued a series of mishaps that occurred as the fault of the terrorists, and as a result of errors of pilots. The biggest tragedy, which killed 217 people, occurred over the Atlantic Ocean. Transcript of “black boxes” then led investigators to the unequivocal conclusion about the guilt of what happened putting the blame on crew commander.
Flights: 1.07 million. Crash: 4. Died: 402.

5. Kenya Airways

The airline was established in 1977 to meet the increasing demands of tourism industry of the country. And although it accounted only two plane crashes, statistics are alarming since it has not done that many of operations. In addition, two incidents occurred in the past 10 years, and both during night flights. In 2000, Kenya Airways plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing 169 people, and in 2007 another airliner airlines crashed in a swamp, killing 114 passengers.
Flights: 450 000. Crash: 2. Died: 283.

4. Philippine Airlines

Established in 1941, the Philippines state carrier made to the list of dangerous airlines solely because of the unfortunate coincidence. If it had not taken a liking to flights of terrorists, Philippine Airlines could boast of an impeccable past. However, during the 70-year history of the company’s planes blew up at least three times and once the plane was seized by terrorists. Fortunately, despite a large number of incidents of people in them died a little. Highest number of deaths, 36 people, was when the plane broke up in the air due to bomb exploded in the toilet.
Flights: 1.18 million. Crash: 6. Died: 107.

3. Iran Air

Before the revolution of 1979 the airline was the official carrier of the country, but then things began to go get worse. It reduced the number of flights to many international destinations and in the end, this year the European Commission forbade it to fly to EU countries. The reason for this was found sufficient. Over the past 10 years the company has suffered three crashes (the one without casualties). But the biggest disaster occurred in 1988 and immediately claimed the lives of 300 people.
Flights: 970 000. Crash: 5. Died: 708.

2. China Airlines

Chinese national carrier is actually based in Taiwan and is one of the largest in Asia. For unclear reasons, it is with these airlines that a large number of incidents occurred causing major casualties. The most serious accident occurred in 2002 during the voyage Taiwan-Hong Kong and killed 225 people. Then, all blamed on too old technique, and the airline promptly got rid of this type of aircraft. Now the average age of the fleet of the company is 7 years. Also interesting is the fact that China Airlines has a few years unsolved problems concerned the lack of pilots’ communications during flights, especially passing over the territory of the Czech Republic. For example, last year because of the alarm raised by Air Force fighter jets of the BBC countries.
Completed flights: 910 000. Crash: 6. Died: 763.

1. Cubana Airlines

Cubana Airlines was established in 1929 and is one of the first commercial airlines in the world. The national carrier has a fleet of Liberty Island, in the mass, consisting of “Antonov” and “Ilyushin” inherited from the time of the Soviet Union. So a huge number of accidents are expected to take place. Despite the fact that Cuban authorities are currently engaged in work to replace liners, and the latest incident in the airline occurred in 1999, yet it is worth considering, choosing it as a carrier.
Completed flights: 320 000. Crash: 8. Died: 404.

1. Democratic Republic of the Congo
Not to be mixed with the neighboring Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become the poorest country in the world as of 2010. Democratic Republic of the Congo was known as Zaire until 1997. Congo is the largest country in the world that has French as an official language – the population of D.R Congo is about six million larger than the population of France (71 million people in D.R Congo vs 65 million in France). The Second Congo War beginning in 1998 has devastated the country. The war that involves at least 7 foreign armies is the deadliest conflict in the world since World War II – it has already killed 5.4 million people. In Africa the war is called African World War. It is estimated that in 2010 at least 45,000 people in Congo are killed monthly.

2. Zimbabwe
Thanks to hyperinflation Zimbabwe has become the second poorest country in the world dropping from first position in 2010. It used to one of the 10 poorest countries but the 87.9 sextillion percent inflation has left the countries economy into ruins. The inflation worrying the country since 2007 saw the government printing 100 billion dollar bills that were only good enough to buy a few eggs.

3. Liberia
Liberia is one of the few countries in Africa that have not been colonized by Europe. Instead, Liberia was founded and colonized by the slaves who escaped from America. These slaves made up the elite of the country and they established a government that closely resembled that of the United States of America. In 1980 the president of Liberia was overthrown and a period of instability and civil war followed. After the killings of hundreds of thousands Liberia is in a deep economic crisis. Statistics indicate that about 90% of the population lives below $1.25 a day.

4. Burundi
In addition to being one of the poorest countries in the world this small landlocked African country is known for its wars between the inhabiting competing tribes. The reason Burundi is so poor is because they have never really had any peaceful time between the everlasting civil wars. Corruption, poor access to education, and a high percentage of HIV and AIDS are all the things that Burundi is known for. Approximately 80% of Burundians live in poverty and according to the World Food Programme 57% of children under 5 years suffer from chronic malnutrition. 93% of Burundi’s exports revenues come from selling coffee.

5. Somalia
Unlike many African countries Somalia has never been officially colonized by any country. The efforts of the British Empire were successfully driven back at least 4 times. While Somalia is situated in Eastern Africa it has close ties to the Arab world. As a Muslim country it also belongs to the Arab League.

In recent years the poor people of Somalia have found a new way to make money – hijacking international boats and taking the crew and the cargo as hostage. International companies are known to pay pirates from 1 to 20 million dollars just to get the ships back. An oil tanker filled with oil can be worth a few hundred million dollars.

6. Eritrea
The location of Eritrea gives it an advantage of controlling the sea route through the Suez Canal. This is why Italy made it its colony just a year after the opening of the canal in 1869 and why the British conquered it in 1941. In the present Eritrea has been accused by the USA of having relations with terrorists. In 2009 US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused Eritrea in supplying weapons to Somalian militant group al-Shabab which is believed to have relations with Al Qaeda.

7. Central African Republic
As the unoriginal name suggest this former French colony is right in the middle of Africa. Being among 1 of the poorest countries in the world means that the governmental control of the country is extremely weak. The well-being of the population is entirely dependent on foreign aid and numerous non profit organizations. The very present of aid workers in the country is the largest source of revenue for Central Africans. An estimated 40% of import revenue comes from selling diamonds mined from the countries rich land.

8. Niger
Niger is one of the poorest countries in Africa – over 80% of its land is covered by the giant desert of Sahara. While it might seem like a hostile place to live it is actually even worse – ongoing droughts are leading to more desertification. One day the whole Republic of Niger might be swallowed by the mighty desert. Currently most of its terrain is made up of desert plains and sand dunes with some savanna around the Niger river. Over 5000 years ago the same land was actually covered with fertile grasslands – the desertification has took place in the last 2000 years.

9. Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is a poor west African country that has English as its official language. Over the years however the locals have used English to derive their own language called Krio. It uses English vocabulary but the grammar comes from 12 different African languages. As is the case with a lot of the top 10 poorest countries, Sierra Leone is also one of the largest diamond manufacturers of the world. If you have seen the movie Blood Diamond you should know that it is based on Sierra Leone.

10. Afghanistan

Over 70% of Afghanis live with less than 2$ a day. To make money a lot of people have gone into drug trafficking. Afghanistan is the worlds largest exporter of heroin. The drug problem in this poor country is so large that a drug test in the Afghanistan police force showed that 17% of the countries police officers had lately used drugs. Even worse – only 30% of the police can read! No wonder Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world.

1. Earthquake and tsunami, Japan (2011)
Cost: $235 billion (by the World Bank)

So far, 8,649 people have been confirmed dead and another 13,262 are missing since the 9.0-magnitude quake struck off the coast near Sendai, Japan, on March 11, 2011. The degree of damage caused by the earthquake and resulting tsunami was enormous. Videos show that almost no parts of any structures were left standing in the worst affected areas.

Failure of the cooling system at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant intensified the situation, resulting in evacuation of about 200,000 people residing around the plant.
The World Bank on March 21 said that damage might reach $235 billion, while Japan's government had a higher estimate of $309 billion. The damage estimate could go even higher as it does not include losses in economic activity from planned power outages or the broader impact of the nuclear crisis, making the disaster world's most expensive on record.

2. Kobe earthquake, Japan (1995)
Cost: $100 billion (by the World Bank)

The Great Hanshin earthquake, or Kobe earthquake, occurred on Jan. 17, 1995, in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. The focus of the quake was located 16 km (10 miles) beneath its epicenter, 20 km (12 miles) away from the city of Kobe. Measured at 6.8 magnitude, the earthquake killed nearly 6,500 people, making it the deadliest disaster in the world that year.
The Kobe quake caused about $100 billion in destruction, according to an calculation by the World Bank, but Japanese trade rebounded within a year, with imports recovering fully and exports back to 85 percent of normal levels.

3. Hurricane Katrina, U.S. (2005)
Cost: $81 billion total damage cost (by NOAA)

Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was one of the worst disasters in the U.S. history. It made landfall along the Gulf Coast on Aug. 25, 2005. At least 1,836 people died in the hurricane and in the subsequent floods. Five years later, thousands of displaced residents in Mississippi and Louisiana were still living in temporary accommodations.
The total damage from Katrina is estimated at $81 billion (2005 U.S. dollars). It also generated the largest single loss in the history of insurance - $41 billion, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

4. Northridge earthquake, California, U.S. (1994)
Cost: $42 billion (by NOAA)

While there have been more powerful earthquakes than the magnitude 6.7 Northridge quake, it caused large-scale damage throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley due to the location of its epicenter.

The Northridge earthquake occurred on Jan. 17, 1994, in Reseda, a neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, Calif., and lasted for about 10-20 seconds. The quake resulted in more than 60 deaths and more than 5,000 injuries. More than 25,000 people were left homeless, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In addition, the earthquake caused an estimated $25 billion in damage, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in the U.S. history.

5. Sichuan earthquake, China (2008)
Cost: $29 billion (by the World Bank)

The May 12, 2008, Sichuan earthquake was a deadly earthquake that measured at 8.0 magnitude. The quake killed about 70,000 people and left more than 18,000 missing. The epicenter was 80 km (50 miles) west-northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, where almost 4 million people resided.
Estimates put direct damage and losses from the earthquake at $29 billion, with indirect damage much higher.
Note: The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, which caused about 250,000 deaths, is not included on this list. Economic losses there amounted to only $14 billion in today's prices, partly because of low property and land values in the affected areas.
However, money is only one scale of evaluating the impacts of natural disasters.

This is an amazing place, where people used to live quite well thanks to the phosphate mines they were exploring. Unfortunately when the mines were already exploited the country had to face some financial difficulties. But no matter what the economic conditions are the island remains one challenging place and it is rather interesting destination. Its main industry after mining was over is financial operations, as taxes there are really low and also tourism is a business that locals are now developing!

The islands are famous with their typically tropical climate and thanks to the regular rainfalls the nature is more than gorgeous.
